Deadline for tax deferral approaching and online tool

On March 29, 2018, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Here’s a reminder that applications for the City’s tax deferral program are due on Monday, April 2. Residents may be eligible if they make less than $57,000 per year, if they are willing to volunteer, or if they meet other qualifications. The programs allow residents to delay paying taxes and/or to pay less in taxes. More information can be found by calling the City at 617-625-6600 x3522 or by visiting this website www.somervillema.gov/seniortaxhelp.

Take a look as well at a webpage that Alderman At-Large Stephanie Hirsch put together, based on information from the Assessing Office. Residents can check their eligibility and see how much they can save on annual expenses: www.somervilletogether.com/taxdeferral. “In future years, I hope that we can expand this program so that more seniors and other residents of different income levels and ages can qualify for a deferral program,” said Alderman Hirsch.

You can also just go up to city hall if it is too confusing. They were very helpful to me there. I had thought I knew what to fill out and it turned out another one was better for me. For those of us who are formed impaired it is another option. I expected kranky people up there due to the nature of their job but was pleasantly surprised at how nice they were to me. Even filled out the forms for me which would have taken hours for me.
