Shoveling and Safety Reminder from Mayor Curtatone

Message from Mayor Joe Curtatone on Thursday, Jan. 4, with a special snow emergency update and important information related to the coming extreme cold. This is unusual weather, so please read the full message below.

We’ll be assessing conditions Friday mid-morning to determine when we can end the snow emergency with the hopes of ending it midday. If you are in a City or School lot, please plan accordingly, and remember that cars will need to be moved from the lots within 2 hours when the emergency is over. Until that time, please stay off the roads to allow crews to continue with cleanup.

With the coming extreme cold, unshoveled sidewalks will turn to ice and create dangerous conditions. So it is especially important that property owners shovel their sidewalks within 6 daylight hours of the end of snowfall, which means walks must be clear by 1 p.m. Friday. But with the single digit temperatures, please shovel safely. Please bundle up, leave no skin exposed, shovel only in short bursts, and take plenty of breaks to warm up inside. Please also check on your elderly neighbors or others who may need assistance with shoveling or errands, and help shovel out fire hydrants and catch basins. And if you or anyone you know loses heat, please contact 311 so we can help ensure you remain safe.
