With a promising lineup to work with, the Somerville High School freshman girls volleyball team is off to a fine start to the season. Following a 3-2 start, the Highlanders have posted wins against Lawrence, Arlington and Malden.

“The team looks very strong,” said coach Krista Invernizzi. “We’re working on fundamentals, serving, bumping and setting.”

Leading the way for the Highlanders are defensive specialist Lexmi Spearing along with Yuying Guo and Ashli Garcia. As for serve receive, the Highlanders are looking for the strong efforts of Celeste Alvarado, Kezia, Tiburcio, Adrianna Keefe and Kayla Brown-Haynes. Also strong on defense are Hebron Abadi, Leslie Duarte along with Tianna Sebastian, Jennifer Lagos and Geogina Gerbier.

“They’re all improving their skills,” said Invernizzi. “Freshman volleyball is all about the serve. Getting it over the net, and inbounds is the key at this level.”
