Union Square was host to a festival of sweet surprises Saturday.

With fluff-eating contests like “Fluff Fear Factor” numerous games and two full concert stages, the Fifth Fluff Fest Sponsored by Union Square Main Streets and the Somerville Arts Council was a delight for visitors far and near to try their favorite snack. This year celebrated the Whoopie Pie specifically.

“It’s fluff-tastic!” said Shannon Linderman.

“This morning I ate it with choclate chips,” said Bree Potter, who added she had only recently come to fluff, and loved it.

The festival was the brainchild of Union Square Main Streets and Mimi Graney, who was enthusiastic about the large crowd. “Each year it basically doubles in size,” she said. “Everyone thinks that it’s the good of their childhood,” she said of the marshmallow spreads ageless appeal. “Everyone connects it with fun.”
