Somerville Snow Emergency Ends Wednesday, March 15 at 7 a.m.

On March 14, 2017, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

All cars must be moved from City and school lots by 9 a.m. to avoid ticketing and towing. Property owners must shovel sidewalks by 1 p.m. Wednesday (within 6 daylight hours following end of snowfall).

The City of Somerville’s snow emergency will end Wednesday, March 15, at 7 a.m. and normal parking rules will resume at that time. It’s important to note that while rain is expected to move in and some streets may appear clear, residents must continue to follow snow emergency parking procedures until the emergency is lifted Wednesday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight, which will result in hazardous, icy conditions so crews will need to continue treating the roads overnight, as well as clear catch basins and fire hydrants. Because of the expected dangerous conditions, property owners are urged to shovel sidewalks as soon as possible, and all residents are encouraged to take safety precautions if they have to be out walking or driving.

The information below offers tips to avoid ticketing and towing as well as strategies for being a good neighbor.

CARS IN LOTS: Residents parked in municipal or school lots during the snow emergency have a two-hour window to move their vehicles after the end of a snow emergency. Cars still parked in municipal and school lots after 9 a.m. Wednesday will be subject to ticketing and towing to ensure crews are able to safely plow lots.

PERMIT VISIBILITY: Please note that by 7 a.m. Thursday, March 16 (24 hours after the end of the snow emergency), residential or visitor parking permits must be cleared of snow and visible or the vehicle may be ticketed.

SNOW REMOVAL FROM VEHICLES: Please note that by 7 a.m. Friday, March 17 (48 hours after the end of the emergency), your vehicle must be fully cleared of snow to avoid ticketing.

SIDEWALK SHOVELING: To allow safe passage for all and to avoid being ticketed, clear snow from your sidewalks within 6 daylight hours of the end of snowfall (by 1 p.m. Wednesday). A path at least 36-inches wide is required to allow wheelchair passage. If you are a senior or are otherwise physically unable to shovel, please call the Council on Aging during normal business hours to sign up in advance for assistance during the NEXT storm. For assistance immediately, the independent website www.snowcrew.org may be able to match you with a volunteer.

HOW TO HELP: Fire, Water, and DPW crews are out clearing catch basins and fire hydrants, but as always, if you are able to clear the catch basin or fire hydrant near your home, your assistance with this effort will be greatly appreciated. Additionally, if you are able, please consider assisting neighbors who may need help with shoveling and consider checking in on elderly neighbors or others who may need additional assistance.

SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES: Somerville Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, March 15. City Hall will open on time at 8:30 a.m., and all Public Libraries will open at noon. Public skating at Veterans Memorial Rink is scheduled from noon until 3 p.m., and open gym will take place at Somerville High School from noon until 3 p.m. As an additional reminder, trash collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of this week.
