The Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on 21 Cherry Street and the Murdock & Cedar development is being held tonight at City Hall. We’re sure Chairperson Susan Fontana will do another admiral job in handling the crowd, as she always does. Don’t mess with a well-versed East Somerville lady who grew up here.

A lot attention is being paid this week to the Super Bowl. Let’s hope that we all get the pleasure of watching Goodell present the trophy to the Patriots. It would be nice to watch him present it to Tom Brady. The revenge tour finally ends on Sunday. Our prediction is just a win – we don’t care how many points – just a win for NE.

Happy birthday to a lot of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: Happy birthday first of all to a Maria “Nella” Nunes, a local lady who is always smiling and a true Somerville girl from a large family here on Winter Hill. Nella, as many refer to her, is a nice person, with a great personality and you can mostly find her on the job at McCarthy Storage on Harvard St., Medford. Drop in and rent a storage space and say “Hi.” Happy birthday as well to Sheila Howe of the famous Howe family. We hope she has a great birthday. We also hear that her husband John also had a birthday recently in January. May both have a great day/weekend. Happy birthday too to an old friend, Louise Lounsberry. We hope she has a great day for herself.

We see that Mayor Joe Curtatone has made national news on the recent goings-on about the city’s Sanctuary City stance. He got some pretty good press out it. He has done a great job here in Somerville. Maybe he should run for governor against the fake republican Charlie Baker?

Congratulations to Denise Provost for being the lone Somerville legislator to vote NO on the recent rush to give everyone a pay raise for all leadership roles in the house and senate as well as judges. Funny how they started this right after election for their offices last November. Senator Pat Jehlen voted to grant the raises, along with state representative Christine Barber who voted YES. Sometimes bills take a year or so to pass the legislatures, but suggest a pay raise and – wow –  you’d get whiplash watching it pass.

Glad to hear that Charlene Harris is finally home after her surgery. She has been in the a long time, going back to the beginning of November. We send our regards and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We hear that four people might be running now for Alderman At Large against the four incumbents. One more will make it a primary. It looks like every one of the aldermen will be on their toes this election year. In the ward fights we still hear a name in Ward 1, now we hear someone in Ward 4, Ward 7 and possibility of Ward 6. So far, Wards 2, 3 and 5 are being left alone for now. The fundraisers will be held in earnest now. It will be interesting to see who is supported by whom. We still hear that Mayor Joe is possibly supporting two of the candidates for Alderman At Large – just a rumor floating around. If anyone thinking of running for office this year let us know so we can mention it!

Pat Reardon, a local Somerville lady, retired Somerset Bank manager and Past President of Somerville Rotary has been ill and we send our warmest regards for a fast get-back-on-your-feet and back-to-normal. Pat is a great lady, loved by many here in the city. She and her husband Joe live in the Magoun Square area and are known all across the city.

Charlie Chisholm is still over at MGH, undergoing major surgery with more being planned. Our thoughts are with him for a full recovery. He’s been in MGH since before Christmas. Not a great place to spend extended time, so we hope he gets better soon.

There’s a new website in town. Check it out at www.somervillema.com. The Somerville Times is on the site. Also check out www.medfordma.com. Someone asked online why we keep these two websites in Newstalk. We guess it’s because we like them.

For those that might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They provide an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course. We’ve been told that the course has seen a major increase in people applying for it, especially women. We can tell you first hand here that it’s a great course and quite thorough. The same goes for this in Newstalk. The club has informed us that many residents of Somerville have called or gone to the club to find out about certification.

It’s 2017 and Demet’s Donuts over on Mystic Avenue is the best. We’re noticing more and more Somerville residents over there getting their coffee and donuts to start the day. The ladies working there are fantastic and always smiling. If you’re in the mood for a huge, great tasting donut drop over early since they disappear as the day gets on.

Nancy and Jason over at Victor’s Deli are back from their vacation down in the Caribbean. It was only a week, but they are back and Victor’s looks a little different now. New tiled floor and refrigerators, but the food is as good as ever. So if you missed them these last few weeks, stop over and let them know.
