The Saint Clement football team went through a very tough week of practice after their 6-0 loss to Charlestown on opening day. Coach Colin Walsh made sure that the following Monday would be full pads and a lot of contact drills.
“We came out sluggish and were not aggressive, so I made sure the team was mentally and physically prepared Friday night verse the Broncos,” said Walsh.
Last season the Anchormen lost 34-12 at Bowditch field in Framingham in a blowout; however, Friday night under the lights at Dilboy, a different team showed up to play. The Anchormen special teams and defense led to four Broncos turnovers, including an onside kick before halftime. The Anchormen were very physical and hared nosed to the ball every possession.
On the offensive side of the ball, senior running back James Alphonse led the way with 21 carries for 121 yards and 2 touchdown’s including a 2 point conversion.
“I have to give credit to my offensive line, they blocked for me,” said Alphonse. The line includes seniors Sean Simas, Rony Charles and Shane Wright and juniors Kevin Pierre and Joe Codair.
The Anchormen led 14-0 at halftime. The score would remain the same, although a major holding penalty by the Broncos on way to a 60 yard run, and an outstanding football play by senior corner back Kayion Chambers to save another 70 yard run saved the shutout for the Anchormen. “Looking from the sidelines, I still cannot believe the speed to catch up to a tailback that was cruising for a touchdown,” said Athletic Director Shawn Thornton. The Broncos were stopped at the Anchormen 20 yard line on four possessions to seal the victory. The team will host the Mystic Valley Eagles on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Dilboy.
