Who says dog days only come in the summertime? Dogs and dog lovers alike had their day in the sun at Conway Park on Sunday at the first-ever Somerville Dog Festival – Dogfest 2010.

Canines and their two-legged friends enjoyed agility demonstrations, participated in skills clinics, checked out the latest doggie fashions and accessories, and competed in events including a dog- owner look-alike contest and a best trick competition. Somerville’s K-9 celebrity, Max the police dog, was even on hand to show off his crime-fighting skills.

The event was hosted by Porter Square Veterinarian in cooperation with the City of Somerville and Northeast Animal Shelter. Veterinarian Dr. Adam Parker said the goal was to raise much-needed donations for the animal shelter, and to promote responsible dog ownership.

“We have a very dog-friendly city,” said Michele Briscoe, chairperson of Somerville Dog Owners, whose family attended with their 13-year-old poodle Strummer. “Having an event like this really showcases all of the things that city dog owners can do with their dogs.”

Strummer was busy enjoying the festivities and unavailable for comment.
