Newstalk – October 19

On October 19, 2016, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

This Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., the city will rededicate the playground park at Otis Street. It will be renamed in memory of Deanna Cremin, who grew up in Winter Hill and was found murdered in 1995, at the age of 17. Her murderer has never been caught, but every year all her family and many friends still hold vigils in hopes that someday someone will offer a case-solving lead to the police. The park is just another opportunity to honor her life. Join Mayor Joe Curtatone, Alderman Matt McLaughlin, and other city officials at the corner of Otis and Dane Streets on Saturday.

One of our many favorite contributors here at The Somerville Times, Chris Haskell, has his own radio podcast show which airs every Thursday night. He calls his show The Villen’s Den. The show airs live on bostonfreeradio.com and on the Boston Free Radio Facebook page. This week he is broadcasting live from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night outdoors in Union Square in front of a small audience, and they will be posting live video onsite. Join in person in Union Square or online. Chris is very outspoken and has a passion for what he does.

A special shout out and congratulations/happy birthday to Phil Chisholm of Wigglesworth Street. A good guy and long time Somerville resident. After suffering the loss of his wife Gail in February and having emergency open-heart surgery, this guy never gives up. He’s a retired “T” employee after 32 years and now working as a Unity Aide at Winter Hill Community Innovation School. He’s loved and supported by all!

Another spot just noticed – we know, it’s been there 70 years, but some of us are a little slow to try new things. If you’re going to Demet’s Donuts on Mystic Avenue, practically across the street is Roberto’s Fruit, all fresh and priced way below supermarkets. The asparagus is the best, along with a huge assortment of fruits.

Happy birthday to a lot of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: Happy birthday to alderman lady Maryann Heuston of Ward 2, who is celebrating this week. We wish her well and many more. She’s a nice person who is always considerate of others. A good friend of the paper, Maureen Rielly, herself a realtor out of Melrose, is celebrating this week. Also, a lifelong resident and popular lady, Valerie Spinale, is celebrating her birthday this week too. She’s from a well-known East Somerville family. We wish her the very best and many more. One final note, happy birthday to Naomi Kiara Rose Harrison, who is two years old this week. One of Don and Pat’s great-grand daughters. It’s hard to believe, and she’s so cute. To all the other Somervillens here and there celebrating this week, we wish you the very best of birthdays and many more to come.

Another special shout out to a great lady, Rosa Moccia, who is the better half of Victor’s Deli in Ball Square. All these years she has smiled for everyone coming into her business and made people feel at home. She recently celebrated her 70th birthday, and if you look at her you’d think she was in her 40’s. She’s a very nice lady and has lots of fans here in Somerville and all around who come to Victor’s. If you haven’t been there in a while drop in and give her a happy birthday wish. Also, you might want to know that Victor’s is now doing deliveries in the afternoon. Can’t get out? Have a craving for their lunches? Call and order!

Too bad we can’t give Demet’s Donuts of Mystic Ave. in Medford the Best of Somerville award. Still, they offer the best donuts and even better fresh breakfast sandwiches – and we mean fresh!

There’s a new website in town. Check it out at www.somervillema.com. The Somerville Times is on the site. Also check out www.medfordma.com. Someone asked online why we keep these two websites in Newstalk. We guess it’s because we like them.

For those that might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They provide an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course. We’ve been told that the course has seen a major increase in people applying for it, especially women. We can tell you first hand here that it’s a great course and quite thorough. The same goes for this in Newstalk. The club has informed us that many residents of Somerville have called or gone to the club to find out about certification. A Utah Concealed Carry Permit Class will be offered at the club on October 22, presented by New England Firearms Academy. This class will enable the student to apply for a concealed carry permit in Utah which, once received, is honored by over 31 states, enabling the holder to carry concealed in each of these states. Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (there will be a break for lunch). If you would like to reserve a spot please send email with you name and phone number to: ccw-lrgc@earthlink.net.
