Somerville artist Sarah Eigen Davis is presenting her first exhibition at Center for Arts at the Armory in November. The exhibit will feature her original watercolors depicting moments of the community of Somerville.
Davis, who went to Drew University, was originally a basketball player but decided to focus on art and three-dimensional design during college. After finishing her bachelor’s degree, Davis went on to Boston Architectural College and obtained her masters in Studio Arts. “I really liked those classes I took that were sculpture and seeing three dimensional design and imagining yourself as a little person inside of it,” said Davis about her experience at BAC.
Besides studying sculpture, Davis also took classes in oils and watercolors. Her pieces in the exhibition focus on watercolor, presenting pieces of Somerville and Cambridge.
Davis says her inspiration comes from the walks she takes with her puppy through Somerville, looking at buildings and architecture at different times during the day. Oftentimes it is late at night or early in the morning that casts a unique perspective on the community. “I’ve been seeing little moments that I want to capture,” she said.
She finds buildings that usually go unnoticed such as little “mom and pop shops” the most interesting, often incorporating them into her work. “There’s so many small and personable buildings in Somerville. There’s something nice about how it feels like a little community.”
The best part about getting ready for the exhibition, Davis said, is having a goal to work towards. When she is not taking care of her puppy or at her job in downtown Boston, she paints. She expressed her joy in this continual creative process. “All of my paintings are iterative, so I’ll come back to them and rework them, and look at them again,” said Davis.
She credits this creative process to her background at BAC when she would work with a lot of different processes and mediums. “It’s fun to experiment with different materials and I think that relates a lot to how I’m painting,” explained Davis.
The Sarah Eigen Davis Exhibition will open on November 6 from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville and will continue through the end of the month.
