After a rough campaign last year, the Somerville High School girls volleyball team is aiming to rebound.

Leading the way are a strong core of seniors in Tatiana Ribero, a setter while Kelly Valverde should also serve as a key asset. Senior Renata Goncalves is also slated to emerge as a middle hitter followed by returning starter Stephanie Pupo, who’s expected to come through at the outside hitter position.

As for juniors, the Highlanders will also be guided by Stephanie Gulllage, a utility setter followed by Brittany Cassidy, also a setter followed by Jackie Homsi and Nazha Ferradi, who should emerge as strong middle hitters. Zhanea Nicholson should also add some depth as an outside hitter followed by Lorenza Etietnne and Nicole Genard. As for middle hitters, the Highlanders will be boasted by the depth of Gabriella Valenzuela, Jennifer Bathol and Tenzin Lama.

“We hope to improve on last season, and we have a lot of experienced starters returning,” said coach Lauren Poussard. “We’re hoping we can continue to improve with each and every game and practice.”

In last Wednesday’s season opener against Greater Lawrence, the Highlanders suffered a 3-0 loss. Strong performances included Homsi with several blocks while Genard and Etienne also contributed with kills.

“Our serving was off, and it’s definitely something we need to work on,” said Poussard.
