A year after Ryan Harrington lost his battle with opioid addiction, the Harrington family founded the Ryan Harrington Foundation in his memory.
From that point on, they set out to make an impact on their community. They figured the best way to do that would be to raise and donate money to youth organizations in Somerville.
In the Fall of 2012 they held a corn toss tournament and raised and donated over $10,000.
“The reason why we’re doing this is because Ryan always played sports growing up,” said Ryan’s father, David Harrington, who, along with his wife Cathy, coached Ryan’s Little League team. “We have wonderful memories of it.”
Over the past four years the Ryan Harrington Foundation has donated $45,000 to Somerville youth including Somerville Little League, Pop Warner, Somerville Youth Hockey, and the Somerville YMCA. Dave said they’re hoping to break $100,000 in the next couple of years.
The idea for a corn toss tournament came from their oldest son, David’s. David and Ryan used to play corn toss together.
Ryan Harrington died from a heroin overdose in 2011. He was 26.
This coming Saturday, Cathy and Dave Harrington along with the friends and family members that make up the foundation will be holding their fifth annual corn toss tournament fundraiser for the Ryan Harrington Foundation in loving memory of Ryan.
Last year, their tournament had over 70 men and women teams, and the Harringtons are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. They will also be selling T-shirts, food, and drinks, and will hold raffles and have lots of kids’ activities.
“We do it for the children and Ryan,” Dave said. We miss him, and this is in his memory.”
