Police officers were dispatched to a Jay St. location at around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday on reports of a motor vehicle break-in in progress.

According to reports, a glove-wearing suspect was spotted checking door handles of cars parked on Howard St. by the reporting party, who stated that the man walked towards Jay Street and continued to check door handles of cars parked there, then entered a parked SUV.

Upon arrival, police located the SUV in question and noted that the interior light was on and that a man was siting inside, on the driver’s side.

As the officers approached the vehicle, the suspect, later identified as Mark Brathwaite, of Cambridge, exited the vehicle and began running down Jay St.

Officers chased Brathwaite on foot and followed as he reportedly fled down Jay St., turned onto Thorndike St., then onto the bike path, eventually jumping a fence into the backyard of a Howard St. residence.

Brathwaite reportedly attempted to hide in the front porch area of the Howard St. home, but officers spotted him there and asked him to surrender.

Brathwaite ran once again and hopped another fence, sustaining light cuts and abrasions in the process, but officers caught up with him and administered a shot of pepper spray to aid in securing his arrest. He was transported by ambulance for treatment of his injuries.

Brathwaite was subsequently charged with resisting arrest and nighttime breaking and entering of a vehicle or boat.
