If you’re looking for the coolest cats to grace the screen in the swingin’ 60’s and 70’s, you couldn’t do much better than Steve McQueen, Michael Caine, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, and Frank Sinatra. That’s why The Somerville Theatre is paying tribute to the grooviest guys on film with a sensational series of criminally good Thursday night double features in a special series entitled “Play It Cool.” It’s a whole lotta hip, for just $10.
The series kicks off on July 28 with a fantastic Steve McQueen double feature – Bullitt (1968) and The Getaway (1972), featuring some of the greatest car chases ever put on film. Co-sponsored by the good folks at Bestride.com.
On August 4 it’s a double hit of Paul Newman in his Oscar-Nominated performance as a rebel with a cause in Cool Hand Luke (1967), as well as tussling with Liz Taylor in Tennessee Williams’ heated drama Cat On a Hot Tin Roof (1958).
August 11 brings on Michael Caine in one of his most ruthless roles in Get Carter (1971), followed by Lee Marvin in the crime-spattered cult classic Point Blank (1967).
Finally, on August 18, the series closes out with a pair of original films that although remade, can’t quite capture the coolness of the originals. Frank Sinatra and the rest of the rat pack plan one final Vegas heist in Ocean’s 11 (1960) and Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway engage in an alluring game of cat and mouse in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).
