Did you hear the big door slamming sound last weekend? It’s all those doors being closed and people running up to NH or down to the cape to have a great summer. Summer’s finally here and we wish all a safe and happy time this year. The streets seemed empty, compared to what we’re used to.

Happy birthday to a lot of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: Happy birthday to one of our own and a great guy, Doug Holder. We still think he should have been appointed the city’s Poet Laureate. Have a great day for yourself, Doug, you’re the best. Happy birthday to Mary Walker, who is celebrating this week. She’s a great lady. Our good friend Anne Webster of CBRB of Beverly is also celebrating. If you’re buying a home in the Salem/Beverly area she’s the one person to see. Former local resident now in IL, Crystal Norton, who is retired from the Air Force. We thank her for her service and send her birthday greetings. Happy birthday to Michael Terrio, another Somerville resident. We hope he enjoys his day as well.

Coming up on July 21, Somerville Community Access TV and Cambridge Community Access TV will hold a joint televised debate from the CCTV facility on Massachusetts Ave, Central Square, Cambridge. Senator Pat Jehlen and her democratic opponent and Cambridge City Councilor Leland Cheung debate starts at 6p.m. The host is none other than well-known Ward Five resident Joe Lynch. It should be fun. The second debate will be with Representative Tim Toomey and his democratic opponent Michael Connolly will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Pat Norton is home from the hospital and thanks to the many friends who sent best wishes. She’s doing great and is still grateful to the guys at Engine #2 for a job well done, as well as the staff at the Philips House 21st floor at MGH. They were all great. Nurses are not given enough praise and gratitude for dedication. All nurses who work in a hospital deserve double the pay.

The City of Somerville budget for fiscal 2017 is on our website, at over 200 pages. We will be working to put the school department budget online as well at www.thesomervilletimes.com.

We wish a happy belated birthday to Mayor Joe Curtatone, who is now officially middle-aged. He turned 50 recently. Some of his closest friends threw him a birthday party way down on the cape. A few notables were invited, and we hear the party was nice.

There’s a new website in town. Check it out at www.somervillema.com. The Somerville Times is on the site. Also check out www.medfordma.com. Someone asked online why we keep these two websites in Newstalk. We guess it’s because we like them.

Answer: This just in from a post on The Somerville Times website. From “JACK” at the Winter Hill Yacht Club – you know – The Winter Hill Yacht Club For Convicted Felons. We think JACK is a member, but who knows. Maybe he is the one who placed the illegal mooring in the river in front of the club. He said we weren’t being classy when we told you all about the illegal mooring last week in Newstalk. We here at The Times are still trying to figure out where we were not being classy. Was it the part about the State Trooper and Environmental Police showing up at the WHYC? Or was it the part about it being against the rules of the WHYC to have more than one boat at the club? Maybe it was the fact that the Executive Board at the WHYC did not do anything about it, even though they knew the mooring was illegal. Or was it about this perpetrator of illegal moorings using Mayor Joe Curtatone’s name all around the club? You are right JACK, none of that is classy at all, but it is not our fault if we simply report the facts. Not to worry JACK, we will be keeping a close eye on the future happenings at the Winter Hill Yacht Club. After all, they are located on publicly owned land that we, the taxpayers, are paying for.

The Somerville Times is in the process of putting out some more boxes, approximately 12 more in strategic places to make it more accessible. There will be some new boxes at Assembly Square as well. A list of boxes will be out with a map showing where you can get the paper, even outside the boxes. If you would like to see the paper at some location near you, call us at 617-666-4010.

What’s going on in Davis Square? The popular square is in need of cleaning and emptying of trash. DPW Commissioner Stan Koty needs to get down there and make sure the square gets cleaned. It’d be a shame for it to get a reputation as being dirty!

For those that might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They provide an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course. We’ve been told that the course has seen a major increase in people applying for it, especially women. We can tell you first hand here that it’s a great course and quite thorough. The same goes for this in Newstalk. The club has informed us that many residents of Somerville have called or gone to the club to find out about certification.

For the best coffee and Donuts again we hope you consider Demet’s Donuts on Mystic Avenue in Medford. We need a real donut shop here in the Ville that is similar. Don’t forget, their egg breakfast sandwiches are made fresh and much better than those sold at franchise places. Also, you can pick up a copy of The Somerville Times there as well.

Local guy and business man Zachary Zasloff, who is SVP of www.shoebuy.com, was recently appointed by the mayor to the Condominium Board of Directors. He’s a good guy who we know will bring new enthusiasm to that board.

Drop over to Sally O’Brien’s any night and see live entertainment and, of course, get some great burgers. Lots of friendly people there, and you can enjoy some good conversation and be entertained at the same time. The other night we tried their famous hamburger and fries that we have been hearing about, hands down the best anywhere in the city. Try them out you’ll love them. By the way, if you like to play poker they have a tournament every Wednesday night as well. On Thursdays it’s open mic for any bands that want to get up there and let people hear them. Liam is the best, he has something going every single night of the week!

Next week’s episode of America’s Got Talent will feature a contestant from Somerville, Jon Bernhardt. The program airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. on NBC.
