Residents urged to report airplane noise

boa_noise_12_2_1_webThe City of Somerville is pleased that in spring 2013, Boston Logan International Airport implemented a new departure procedure for one of its runways that should decrease aircraft noise pollution over parts of the city, but urges residents to continue reporting aircraft noise to compel the Federal Aviation Administration and Massport’s adoption of further alternative operations at Logan Airport that would provide relief to all of Somerville.

How to report aircraft noise:

Online: Visit Massport online at http://www.massport.com/environment/environmental_reporting/noise abatement/noisecomplaints.aspx

By Phone: Call the Massport Noise Complaint Line at 617-561-3333 between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on business days.

Those same complaints should also be registered with the City of Somerville by calling 311 or online at http://somervillema.qscend.com/request.aspx.

My wife reports dozens of these each month. They send letters saying more or less “we’re 24/7 and that’s the approach deal with it” and one time said something like “we shouldn’t have been flying that particular route but the tower must have done it for a reason.” (Can’t make that up.)

The other problem is when they fly over West Somerville. After the jet passes over and continues to fly on the noise continues, it seems forever, but does so for several minutes after the actual fly over. I have to turn the volume up on the t.v. due to this noise level.

Another point is the frequency between flights. On some days it is like rapid fire just one right after another.

Though the building is fairly new construction, I would like to hear from the School Depth. If the noise reaches inside to the classrooms of West Somerville Community School and affects the students.

So its three years in to the new procedure was there ever a follow up study to compare if the noise level actually decreased?

I have also reported, admittedly not nearly enough, and have received the same response(s). It seems to be getting worse. What does reporting do?
