A staple in Union Square since 1995, Cantina La Mexicana, formerly known as Taqueria La Mexicana, where the typical street food of Mexico for fast takeout was served, expanded to serving drinks to accompany the food, creating a gathering place for people to meet and hang out together creating a more laid back atmosphere, a cantina. They offer many choices, including tamales, gorditas, burros, enchiladas, tostadas, empanadas, flautas, tacos and more.

To start, we were offered house made chips and fresh salsa that had a really nice kick. The mango habanero margarita was well balanced, it had a sweet, citrus flavor that was more enhanced with the slight heat of the habanero, truly refreshing. The tacos al pastor with pork were truly special. The pork was marinated in a combination of dried chiles and spices along with pineapple. It is cooked on a vertical rotisserie just like you would see shawarma prepared. It’s served on a double corn tortilla with chopped pineapple, chopped white onion, cilantro, sliced avocado and lime wedges. This dish is not spicy, but well worth asking for the house made hot sauce. The sweet, hot, and citrus along with the freshness of the onion, cilantro and creamy avocado is the perfect combination that will have you looking for more. The beans were fresh with just the right amount of texture of creaminess to beans. The rice was fluffy and simply prepared with a mild flavor that is perfect for palate cleansing.

If you’re a fan of margaritas, they have a unique selection to choose from ranging from $8-$14. Not sure what type of tequila you should have, not a problem. They offer tequila flights with a list of over 50 offerings!

If you’re looking for a great ending to your meal, I would recommend ordering the flan for dessert. This comes with a warning though. It’s enough for two, it’s that big!
