Updated: March 21

At that time, residents will have two hours to move their cars from municipal or school lots in order to allow DPW and public safety crews to safely and efficiently clear lots of snow and ice. Cars still parked in these lots at 1:30 p.m. may be ticketed and towed. Property owners are also reminded that you have six daylight hours from the end of snowfall to shovel sidewalks to a width of 36 inches.

Thank you, as always, for your patience and cooperation during this snow emergency. Happy Spring.

Sunday: March 20

In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville to go into effect at 7 p.m on Sunday, March 20. Somerville Public Schools will be closed on Monday.

During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted). Cars not moved by 11 p.m. Sunday night will be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency. However, because there is no parking enforcement on Sundays, residents may park in these lots effectively immediately. Full snow emergency and snow removal policies may be found on the City’s website atwww.somervillema.gov/snow.

Once a snow emergency is declared, vehicle owners have four hours (unless otherwise noted) from the start of the emergency to move their vehicles to the odd-numbered side of the street (unless otherwise posted), or they will be ticketed and towed. Municipal and school lots will be made available at no cost to residents during snow emergencies. It is important that vehicles only be parked on one side of the street as noted above to ensure plows can make all roads accessible and safe, particularly for emergency vehicles. Snow Emergency Policies:

A snow emergency may be declared whenever four or more inches of snow are predicted. City officials closely monitor storm forecasts and use all available information to make an informed decision. 2-5″ snow predicted, most of which will turn to slush & be gone (practically speaking) in 2 days. How can we get some accountability for asinine decisions like this?

  2. A Moore says:

We are working our way down to where 0″ to 1″ will be a snow EMERGENCY.

  3. Joey Creampuff says:

Its official this city along with Boston, but in particular this city has gone to the leftist socialist. Imagine 20 or more years ago calling snow emergency and cancelling snow for 3-6 inches, never mind calling the emergency for 7p.m. the night before to take affect at 11p.m. and no snow on the ground, till 2a.m.. The amount is what we would call in the day a “dusting” inch maybe 2 inches and the world is ending. Plows were out all night, overtime, cars were being towed so the city and tow company can make more money to hire more. This mayor and board of alderman need to go, we have to stop having unopposed politicians. The Mayor and DPW hack Koty need to go! Wake up Somerville, even you newbies have to be sick of this!

I don’t know that I’d call this the result of “leftist socialism”. I think it’s the result of one or more “hero complexes”, with a dash of nepotism ($$$ for ticket revenue and throwing a bone to independent plow operators). The schools just shut down because they have to when they impose a parking ban. Or maybe they’re just as inept.

I agree with a lot of the mayor’s general policies, but I think he lacks common sense when it comes to specifics.

  5. Jim says:

This was the most infuriating non-snow snow day ever. Pretty soon they’ll be cancelling school if there are threatening clouds in the sky.

  6. Freebie says:

Somerville has a lot of teachers coming in from out of town. Even if the kids can get to schools, sometime the teachers can not. That said, Monday should have been a delayed start and not a cancelled day.

The leftist socialists are the new Somerville parents, we want our kids in school.
