Newstalk – March 9

On March 9, 2016, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

This Friday, March 11, it’s “Flashback Friday” at the Somerville City Club. They used to call these “Sock Hops” in the 50’s & 60’s. Do you still have that poodle skirt? Maybe your bellbottoms and platform shoes? What about those ripped jeans or hammer pants? Break them out! Take a journey back in time and dance the night away to songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Costume dress optional. Join in on Friday, March 11, 7:00-11:00 p.m. at Somerville City Club, 20 Innerbelt Rd., Somerville. Tickets are $15. There will be a cash bar, raffle tickets and 50/50’s. Adults only. All proceeds benefit The Somerville PTA Scholarship Dinner Dance. For tickets, email Kristine Vallery at afaspta@yahoo.com.

Happy birthday to a lot of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: Busy birthday celebrations this week starting with a happy birthday to a great guy and lifelong resident who moved from here recently, John Pratti of Winter Hill. We wish him the very best. He’s also a local real estate agent with the Norton Group. Then a couple of good guys down at the DPW: first a very happy birthday to Mike Browne who does a great job for the city and is a nice guy. A lifelong Somerville guy as well. Another great guy down at DPW is Eddie Nuzzo from East Somerville. Very dedicated to the city. Happy birthday to Eddie! Last week we accidently forgot our own Editor and Chief, Jim Clark. We appreciate his dedication and loyalty over the years and wish him a very happy birthday. Another great guy is former resident Donald Coutoumas, who is here in Somerville quite often, and completely dedicated to his family and friends. Another local real estate agent for many years with Bremis who is celebrating this week, happy birthday to Nick Kondilis. Also this week here in the Ville, celebrating is Marc Piro of the well-known Piro family. We wish him all the best this week as well. Happy Birthday to Dennis Fischman, another well known respected community member for many years. We hope he has a great birthday as well.

Those who might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They offer an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course.

Our paper received a call the other day from a resident here in the city who told us they contacted a Boston media outlet about some irregularities on Election Day, with at least one polling place. It seems the individual – who wishes to remain anonymous – witnessed a group of residents who were escorted into the polling place by a chaperon and were told how to vote, in particular they were told to vote for Hillary Clinton. When we checked with some of the polling stations we found out that Dan Rae of WBZ was investigating it and was questioning some people. We hope if it’s true that something is mentioned to the main office of that agency here in the city, which is a nonprofit agency that was started here in the city back in late 60’s and early 70’s. Does that ring a bell with anyone? Let’s see what happens!

The East Somerville Reunion is being planned for this coming June 25 at the Somerville City Club, across from Holiday Inn. They have a Facebook page set up to take reservations: East Somerville Reunion 2016. The first reunion was very successful, with well over a 100 people attending, and lots of old friendships were restarted. If you grew up in East Somerville in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s you should set aside the date and make your plans to attend. You won’t be disappointed. The reunion people are looking for financial support, so go to their Facebook page and help if you can. This is an exciting event, sort of like a High School reunion, but different age groups are coming together with one purpose: to celebrate their youth growing up in East Somerville. Many thanks to the committee for doing this, the second reunion.
