Call it David vs. Goliath, or perhaps Don Quixote vs. a windmill. Any way you look at it, the City of Somerville has bitten off a bug chunk to chew on as it takes on the juggernaut might of Wynn Resorts and its plan for development of a casino-resort in Everett.

While the City of Boston settled its litigation issues with the Wynn organization, Somerville is still pressing ahead with the four lawsuits that have been brought before the legal system in an attempt to halt the development.

The city cites probable environmental and economic concerns as a consequence of the casino’s eventual placement at the proposed location.

The city contends that the initial licensing process was flawed, and that matters of traffic control, environmental protection, and the effects of such a complex on local neighboring economies were never adequately addressed.

The city seeks to have all of these points examined and fully evaluated by the justice system in order to assure that due diligence has been met for all concerned.

Many local residents are in favor of seeing the Wynn resort completed and become operational, while others share the same concerns expressed in the pending lawsuits that have been filed against the development.

As the battle proceeds and plays itself out, let’s all hope that the best interests of our city are well served in the long term.
