After finishing last season with a 5-5 mark, the St. Clements football team is looking to make a run at the Catholic Central League title. With a third place finish in the standings last year, the Anchormen are hoping to take the top spot this fall.
Highlights from last season include a 20-14 double overtime victory over Matignon along with a 50-24 win over Burke. Other key wins for the Anchormen included a 14-12 win over Minuteman Tech and a 45-0 win over Trinity Catholic on Thanksgiving Day.
In the win, senior Robert Ofedu of Somerville broke Steven Murphy’s all time yardage and rushing record. Ofedu, who now has moved on to play for Tufts as a defensive back and running back, will be missed by his coaches and squad.
Heading into the season, the Anchomen boast eight returning starters on both sides of the ball.
“It will be tough to replace both quarterback Thomas Simas (of Cambridge), who is enrolling into Framingham State this September, and the obvious one Robert Ofeodu,” said head coach Colin Walsh.
Offensively, the Anchormen are led by seniors Sean Simas, Shane Right along with Rony Charles. In the backfiled will be the duo of senior James Alphonse and junior Michael Julce.
Defensively, the Anchormen will be led by Joe Codar along with Julce and James on the defensive line.
“They should provide the defense with quickness and skill at the safety and linebacker positions,’’ said Walsh.
After a series of pre-season scrimmages, the Anchormen will kick off the season against Charlestown on September 11 before hosting Keefe Tech.
