The far-reaching and nearby experiences of local artists are on display in pen and ink at the Somerville Sketchbook Show.

The show was packed at its opening last Friday at the Nave Gallery on Chester Street, where goers explored the work of local artists that depicts places as close by as Davis Square, as remote as Havana and Pinar del Rio, and as impossible to reach as imaginary worlds created on paper.

Rachel Mello’s images, co-curator of the show, include fun representations of Somerville icons and experiences, such as JP Licks and the Davis Square Train Station.

Artist Laura Scheuerell shows her past-paced, musical works, created in the basements of jazz bars and clubs on sketchpads in Brazil.

“I wanted to capture the vibrance of music. I’m really interested in road signs, and often include this with my images,” Scheuerell said.

Scheuerell’s work was accompanied by politically themed watercolors by artist Catherine Aiello, who created the images in Havana and Pinar del Rio.

“I came to this event to learn more about the artists in my area and what kind of things they are doing because I like to know my community. It’s really important to support local art,” said Alejandro Barrios, 40, of Somerville.

This show marks the second annual Sketchbook Show curated by Ellie Laramee-Byers and Rachel Mello, both previously having served as the Coordinators of the Somerville Open Studios.

The exhibition will run until March 3 at the Nave Gallery Annex, 53 Chester Street in Davis Square. The Gallery Hours are Thursday-Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, 2:00-6:00 p.m.
