For the third year in a row, the Somerville High Girls Track Team led by Captains Maureen McNabb, Leighann Nguyen and Melissa Sanon won the Greater Boston League Championship Meet.
The meet was held on Saturday, January 30 at the Reggie Lewis Center. The SHS Girls scored a total of 120 points, followed by Malden with 92, Chelsea was 3rd with 58, Everett was 4th with 41, Greater Lawrence Tech had 37 and Medford with 19.
First place finishers for the Highlanders were Melissa Sanon in the Hurdles, Jackie Eloi in the High Jump, Fiona Borondy-Jenkins in the 1000m and Gabrielle Etienne in the Shot Put. Gabrielle’s winning throw of 39′ 1.25″ set a new GBL Championship Meet record. The previous record was 37′ 9″ set back in 1989 by MaryGrace Filippone of Somerville High. Second place finishers were Youdine Felix in the 55m Dash, Leighann Nguyen in the 600m, Alice Egar in the 2mile and Jackie Eloi in the shot put. Jackie also earned a third place in the hurdles and Lourdes Jean-Louis earned a third place in the Long Jump. Fourth place finishers for SHS were Jennifer Bermudez in the 600m, Alice Egar in the mile and Melissa Sanon in the Long Jump. Placing fifth was Youdine Felix in the Long Jump, Lourdes Jean-Louis in the 55m Dash and Ann Donovan in the Mile.
Our relay team all placed 3rd in the meet earning important points for the teams win. The 4x200m team was Pam Lalaj, Laury Belizaire, Carlea Dolcine and Ye Ethanael Francois. Running on our 4×400 relay was Leighann Nguyen, Jennifer Bermudez, Katia Mathews and Fiona Borondy-Jenkins. The 4x800m team was Abigail OBrien, YuYing Chen, Ann Donovan and Celeste Torra.
This was a great win for the Girls Team. They had lost to Malden during the regular season by 2 points and their goal was to win the GBL Championship Meet. They were focused and worked hard to achieve their goal. This was a hard earned win and I could not be prouder of this team and the Captains that led them.
Next meet for the Highlanders will be the MIAA Division 2 State Meet on February 10 at the Reggie Lewis Center starting at 4:30 p.m.
