Happy Birthday to all of our friends and fellow Villens here this week: A big happy birthday to our good friend Ann Marie Dunbar of Winter Hill. What a great mother, grandmother and resident here in Somerville. A lady who has been involved in the community over the years. We wish her the very best of birthdays. Another happy birthday wish goes out to another good long time friend, Louise Lounsberry, who celebrates this week. We wish her the very best. Also celebrating this week is Kenneth “Cookie” Cooke, whose birthday is on Saturday. He is a great guy and we wish him many more. Ken is a crossing guard at St. Catherine’s on Summer St. when you see him wave and wish him a happy birthday. We want to wish Gina Pino a very happy birthday. She is celebrating on Thursday. Gina is the daughter of our own photographer here at The Times, Claudia Ferro. They are a great family. We are sure they will be celebrating the day together.

Only one week left to either register to vote in the March 1 presidential primary election or to change your party affiliation. You need to do this by next Wednesday, February 10. You can go to the election department in the lower level of City Hall (off School Street entrance) fill out the form or better yet you can just go online to https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/. This year’s presidential primary race is crucial to everyone. There is no excuse since registering to vote can’t be any easier than if they came to your house and did it on the spot.

Those who might be interested in obtaining certification for firearms should look up the Lawrence Rod & Gun Club. They offer an extensive program at the end of which you receive certification for Massachusetts/NRA Certified Firearm Safety Classes. They run a class once a month, which is limited to 10 people and we hear that this is the place to go to learn safety when handling guns. Email gunclub@earthlink.net for more information and or go to their website at www.lawrencerodandgunclub.org and read up about the course.

The East Somerville Reunion is being planned for this coming June 25 at the Somerville City Club, across from Holiday Inn. They have a Facebook page set up to take reservations: East Somerville Reunion 2016. The first reunion was very successful, with well over a 100 people attending, and lots of old friendships were restarted. If you grew up in East Somerville in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s you should set aside the date and make your plans to attend. You won’t be disappointed.

We hear rumblings by some sources out there that after 46 years of holding office this might be the year that Sen. Patricia Jehlen decides to retire, but you won’t hear her saying that. Maybe they’re waiting for the last possible moment so her handpicked candidate can squeeze in at the last minute. We remember Sen. Jehlen’s slogan back in ‘73, something like this: “I won’t use the children as stepping stones for higher office.” Regardless, over in Medford – which is part of her district – there is talk of a political figure who just might decide to test the waters. We also hear that one of the Ward Aldermen is also considering a run.
