Dear Editor
DAVIS SQUARE – SUGGESTION:
The Davis Square businesses might like to draw up a paper which describes the reasons why it would be wiser to have Davis Square be used no longer as a parade stop. There are too many problems when the area is closed to traffic. And our tax dollars are going for more police work while traffic is stopped to keep shoppers out unless by foot. Businesses lose a lot of sales while these parades continue, taking a good part of the day.
There are wider streets in Somerville, and especially so at the new Assembly Row where more businesses need that encouragement. This would be a far better place to arrange parades. These parades take place several times a year, creating multiple problems in the small area of Davis Square extending into Holland Street.
It would be wise for each business to sign the Suggestion Plan and make a notion to the Town of Somerville to make a change to another area of Somerville. Or create a strong paper for the Mayor and Somerville politicians showing why this change should be made.
People who live in Somerville have many needs and Davis Sq. should be used only for those needs. People during parades are deprived of important shopping privileges.
Many of these businesses are small businesses and anyone knows that during parade hours when traffic is stopped, small businesses suffer far more losses than do large corporations.
