Materials & Methods design, which includes a winter village and lighting of Assembly Row’s iconic trusses, to be revealed 5:15 p.m. as part of free “Light up the Row” event that features visit by, pictures with Santa
Assembly Row this weekend will unveil a unique holiday art installation that represents the area’s history while turning the banks of the Mystic River into a winter village, replete with a unique lighting of its iconic metal trusses.
Designed by Materials & Methods, the organization that created the Illuminus festivals last year in SoWa and earlier this fall outside Fenway Park, the installation will feature art and light that visitors can see, touch and experience. The entire installation has been created from reclaimed wood, iron and metal – a fitting tribute to an area that’s all about reinvention and to the three metal trusses that were reclaimed and repurposed from the Central Steel building that once stood on the land.
Mayor Joe Curtatone will unveil the installation at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, as part of Assembly Row’s Light Up The Row holiday event, which takes place from 5-7 p.m., and is free and open to the public. The celebration also will include performances by the Back Bay Ringers, Somerville High School Band and Chorus, and the Somerville Community Chorus. . Mix 104.1’s Karson and Kennedy will emcee the event and there will be a visit by and pictures with Santa, roaming carolers and live animals.
“There is no place like Assembly Row, so we wanted to start a new holiday tradition that was fittingly unique, while capturing the essence of Somerville and the history of this piece of land along the Mystic River,” said Matt Ehrie, VP and general manager at Assembly Row. “We hope our community joins us in beginning holiday celebrations with an event and a creation unlike anything else they will see in Greater Boston.”
More information is available on the Facebook event page and Assembly Row’s website.
