Many of us do feel a certain sense of loyalty to and take pride in the neighborhoods we live, work and play in. And why not? We choose to live in this great city for reasons of our own, and it’s clear that most of us really enjoy it here.
Well, now it seems that the city will be celebrating its 2015 All-America City win by hanging celebratory banners around Somerville. But because they don’t have enough of the banners to cover the whole city they have launched a friendly “Square Flair” competition to determine which area will be festooned with the decorations.
Loyal locals are invited to post photos depicting their love and devotion to their particular areas online using the hashtag #SquareFlair. The city has posted guidelines for earning points by posting certain types of photos on social media sites.
At the end of the week the points will be counted up and the lucky Square will be declared the winner, thus earning the privilege of serving as standard bearer for the city’s celebration.
On Saturday, November 7, 2–4 p.m., there will be a special event held at the City Hall concourse where the winner(s) will be announced, along with some Square-themed fun and games to liven up the occasion.
It’s all in good fun and a little friendly competition between neighborhoods can be a warming thing. Especially considering that winter is just around the corner.
