Make the Mural Night is this week, on Thursday, from 8:00–10:00 p.m. at 34 Cross Street East. You are welcome to join in to bring the mural design to life. Help trace the community mural design on the wall at Deano’s Pasta Factory. The Cross Street mural projection event is an opportunity for the community to see and be a part of a very important part of the mural process. You can help trace the community mural design up onto its new home and reveal a mural design created from community participation and stories told at the mural design event on the 18th. The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded East Somerville Main Streets, in conjunction with the Somerville Arts Council, a grant to fund a place making initiative for East Somerville during 2014 and 2015. The initiative, called “This is East,” will celebrate, maintain and promote East Somerville’s identity at this time of change for the neighborhood. This event is only one piece of a much larger place making initiative that includes video stories and other events.

Happy Birthdays this week to some of our Villen friends as well as friends of The Times: To young Corey Norton, who is about to become a dad, we wish him and his fiancé the very best and hope he has a great day for himself. His grandmother, Patti Norton, celebrates the same day, on the 29th. We wish her the very best and a happy birthday to her as well. To a great guy who grew up here in the Ville, joined the service, married and is himself a father of three boys, happy birthday to Ricky Hart. We wish a great day for him. Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang is celebrating this week as well. He’s been working very hard and doing a great job representing his constituents in Ward 5. We wish him the very best. To Ms.Laura Pitone, the School Committee member from Ward 5, as well is celebrating this week. Laura, if you haven’t met her, is a smart lady and we predict she’s going far here in the city in the future. May she have a great day. What can we say about Jimmy DelPonte that hasn’t already been said? Mr. Somerville himself, a great guy whom we watched over the years develop into one great person, just like his father Freddie. We wish Jimmy the very best. Happy Birthday to Ms. Janice Delory, who is also celebrating this week. She used to work in the mayor’s office and some might remember her on the School Board back in the 80’s. We wish her the very best. A good friend of ours who hails from Somerville, Joe DaSilva. What a nice guy, always smiling and always a good word to say about everyone. We wish him the very best this week of birthdays. Former Villen and a great person, Diane Mahoney, is also celebrating this week. We wish her the very best. To all the others we might have missed – and it appears there are a lot of July birthdays – we salute you and say happy birthday to you as well.

The City of Somerville’s Police Department and the Center for Teen Empowerment brings together police, youth, and community members in a series of Walking Dialogues over the summer. This initiative aims to make communication between Somerville community members and the police department easily accessible, and strengthen relationships among police, youth, community residents and business owners. With your feedback, they hope to identify actionable steps to address issues and concerns in the Somerville community. The last two Walking Dialogues of the season take place on Wednesday, July 29, Meeting Point: Morse-Kelley Park-Spring Hill and Wednesday, August 19, Meeting Point: Grimmons Park, 6 p.m.
