Longtime Somerville resident Janet Feld, a veteran singer-songwriter on the New England folk circuit, wants to make sure that youngsters get the same opportunities that she did.
She has organized a series of quarterly acoustic concerts that will assist local charities. Her upcoming event will benefit the fine arts department at Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy in Dorchester and Mattapan. Feld has been teaching music at the Academy since the fall of 2010.
The music series is called “Janet’s Planet: Concerts for Humanoids” and the first show takes place Saturday, June 13, at the Arts at the Armory Café, 191 Highland Ave in Somerville. Feld (www.janetfeld.com) will perform with singing guitarists Esther Friedman and Mark Stepakoff. The music starts at 7 p.m. and the suggested donation is $20, with all proceeds going to Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy.

“For most children, their introduction to music and the arts begins at school,” said Feld, a former Boston Music Award nominee who has appeared at Harvard Square’s Club Passim as well as folk festivals in Kerrville, Texas, and Falcon Ridge, N.Y. “We want to make sure that students at the Academy are able to participate in these programs.
“Our school has one of the most robust fine arts programs in the Archdiocese and it serves low income families. Students range from pre-school through eighth grade and are provided weekly music classes during the school day plus the option of after-school lessons. We also offer a musical theater program.”
The programs are primarily funded through donations, giving students opportunities for music education that their families could not afford otherwise. Money raised at the concert will be used for instruments, lesson scholarships, sound equipment and supplies for the musical theater program.
Feld, who has performed all over the country and in Europe, is not only an outstanding singer and songwriter but also a dazzling guitarist who uses a variety of innovative styles. Her engaging original songs and wry sense of humor have made her a crowd favorite wherever she plays. Blending folk, pop and country styles, she writes songs that can be touching and amusing at the same time.
Friedman (www.reverbnation.com/estherfriedman), a friend of Feld for many years and a co-writer on some of her songs, is a highly creative composer whose pieces explore the range of human emotion, with a dash of the unexpected. Stepakoff (www.markstepakoff.com) offers a mix of wry humorous material and poignant ballads in the vein of Loudon Wainwright III and John Prine.
The show will use an in-the-round format, with each performer taking turns and occasionally backing one other.
“This will be a really fun concert and it’s for a great cause,” said Feld, a Somerville resident since 1994. “You’ll be hearing a wide range of musical styles and helping out a lot of kids, too.”
