A man who sent text messages that brought a SWAT team to Somerville Aug. 4 voluntarily checked himself into a psychiatric facility after the incident, police said this week.

At 10:48 a.m., Somerville Police received a third party report from a woman who stated that she had received a text message from her brother, a resident of 98 Elm Street, stating that a male guest in that house had made threats to kill the residents at that address.  The text messages indicated that the guest was experienced in martial arts, was armed with a knife and was acting irrationally, police said.

It also stated that her brother was hiding in his room and concerned for both his safety and the safety of other roommates whom he hadn’t seen since early this morning, police said.  Sergeant Michael Mulcahy of the Somerville Police Department briefly made phone contact with the reporting party via cell phone, but contact was lost and never re-established.

Out of caution and concern for the safety of the occupants of the residence, Acting Chief Michael Cabral activated the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council  SWAT team and Negotiation Team, police said.

About three times as many officers were used because the SWAT team was in the middle of a training session, police said.

The nearby Kennedy Elementary School, which houses a youth summer program, was locked down until police stabilized the situation.  Shortly after the team arrived on scene, telephone contact was made with the occupants inside of the apartment.  They voluntarily exited the building and were brought to Somerville Police Headquarters to be interviewed.

Police said no crime occurred.
