The Cambridge police officer at the center of last summer's controversy over the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. helped Somerville cops nab a man who was shooting traffic signs with a pellet gun near McGrath Highway on June 2, police said.

Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley gained national attention last July after he arrested Gates outside his Ware Street home. Last Wednesday morning he helped arrest Roberto S. Perinho, 31, of 121 Chase St., Fall River, after 15 police units from three cities received a report of a man cocking and pointing a handgun on McGrath Highway.

When officers arrived, they allegedly found Perinho sitting on a brick wall with a black pistol in reach. Officers later learned the handgun was actually a pellet gun, police said.

Perinho allegedly told officers he didn't think there was anything wrong with shooting pellets at traffic signs. He was arrested and charged with unlicensed possession of a firearm. As he was being booked, police allegedly found a marijuana cigarette and Perinho was also charged with possession of a class D drug.
