Two Somerville Police Officers were recently recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and a third will be honored later this week.

On May 27th, Sergeant Timothy Mitsakis was honored by the Cambridge Police Department at their Annual Awards Ceremony, held at M.I.T. Kresgie Auditorium. Sergeant Mitsakis received the Law Enforcement Award for his actions regarding an incident that occurred in Cambridge on May 8, 2009. On that day, while he was conducting traffic enforcement on the 1100 block of Broadway an alert came over the police radio about a violent, armed home invasion that just occurred in a North Cambridge neighborhood bordering West Somerville. Several minutes had gone by when he noticed two male parties who matched the descriptions of the suspects who were wanted for the home invasion heading westbound on Broadway. At that point, he saw them as they sprinted several blocks to Broadway and North Street. Sgt. Mitsakis pulled his cruiser in front of them and detained both suspects. He then called via radio to the police dispatcher, advising his location and what he had observed. Sergeant Mitsakis saw that one of the suspects had a bloody towel wrapped around his hand. When the Cambridge Police units arrived the two suspects, who were well known them, were placed under arrest after witnesses who were brought to the scene identified them as the assailants. Sergeant Mitsakis actions led to the quick apprehension of two violent suspects.

Later on May 27th, Detective James Hyde received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the New England Narcotics Officers Association at their annual training conference in Hyannis. Detective Hyde was recognized for serving for more than twenty years as a narcotics investigator, having conducted more than a thousand investigations, leading to hundreds of arrests and convictions and acquiring hundreds of thousands of dollars in asset forfeiture from drug dealers. Detective Hyde has survived two attempts on his life, including a 1992 incident where he was dragged more than a quarter of a mile through Union Square by a known drug dealer, and a 1994 incident in Cambridge where he was stabbed in the chest.

Chief Michael Cabral was on hand for both ceremonies to personally congratulate each officer.

On Tuesday evening, Officer Albert Gee will be honored by the Boston Celtics during game three of the NBA playoffs. Officer Gee was selected by the Celtics organization to receive the "Hero's Among Us" award for saving the life of a choking five year old child while on a construction detail on May 25th.
