Somerville firefighters responded to a house fire at 87-89 Temple Street at 10:13 p.m. on Friday, February 20.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions in the rear of the third floor apartment and rear porch. Fire spread above the ceiling and into the roof area requiring two alarms to be sounded.
The Somerville Fire Department was assisted by Medford and Cambridge fire companies.
The third floor apartment and roof suffered extensive fire, smoke and water damage. The first and second floor apartments suffered heavy water damage.
The home contained three apartments and all eight occupants were displaced. The damage is estimated at $300,000. A home at 73 Derby St. also suffered exterior damage due to heat.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital, one for a wrist injury after slipping on ice and another for a cat bite suffered while attempting to remove a pet cat from the building.
