Hello, this is Mayor Joe Curtatone on Monday, Feb. 16, with an important update on the city’s snow removal operations and current snow emergency and parking ban.

Due to continued historic levels of snowfall and now more than seven feet of snow on the ground in Somerville, the city’s snow emergency and parking ban will remain in effect until further notice. Similar to our procedure following last week’s storms, later this week, we hope to announce rolling lifts of the parking ban as we are able to clear streets and as weather permits.

The rapid accumulation of snow from back-to-back storms has not allowed enough time for sufficient snow removal between storms and severe cold has prevented melting.

As a result, the Fire Dept. has identified too many streets and intersections that are too narrow for safe passage of emergency vehicles. However, as crews work to remove snow from these streets, please know that contingency plans are in place should an emergency arise.

Nonetheless, street access remains our primary concern and focus, and we ask all residents to help us complete this work by remaining off of the even side of the street (unless otherwise posted).

Currently, more snow is in the forecast for this week and next weekend, and our ability to clear streets this week is crucial.

The city is deploying every resource it has, we have hired every contractor we can get, we have purchased any additional equipment we can get, and we have and continue to request crews and equipment from the state.

We understand the difficulties and frustrations this winter has caused residents. It has been challenging for us too. But we are determined in our efforts. Stay warm and be safe.
