Alderman-At-Large Mary Jo Rossetti represented Somerville at this year’s MMA meeting on January 23.

Mary Jo Rossetti, Somerville Alderman-At-Large, joined selectmen, mayors, managers, councilors and finance members from across the state at the Massachusetts Municipal Association’s 2015 Annual Meeting held at the Hynes Convention Center on January 23.

The lineup of renowned speakers included Gov. Charlie Baker who expressed his commitment to a partnership with local government. The opening session included a keynote address by international business consultant Mike Walsh, who delivered a powerful message about thriving in an era of disruptive technological change.

Twenty workshops held during the Conference focused on best practices, management tools, actions and issues that are essential to running municipal government efficiently and effectively in challenging economic times. “Now, more than ever, by participating in this important event, local officials have shown their commitment to effective public service. We applaud their dedication and hope the conference will help them as they provide leadership in communities across Massachusetts,” said MMA Executive Director Geoffrey C. Beckwith.

Ald. Rossetti additionally joined in conversation of the session entitled The Community Preservation Act: What Makes It Great. This session offered an opportunity to learn about ways to make the most of this valuable resource. “Somerville is now one of 158 CPA communities (45%) in the state,” reminds Rossetti. “Among other opportunities (historic preservation and recreational / open space planning), this Act allows for Local control over the creation of new housing opportunities.”   Rossetti also accepted invitation to join the WEMO (women elected municipal officials) Luncheon, where she and others discussed with the newly elected Lt. Governor, Karen Polito, concerns of Local Aid, educational mandates with lack of funding, and many other concerns relative to our community.

The meeting also featured more than 230 exhibitors, offering the latest state-of-the-art products and services to municipalities. The MMA Annual Meeting is the largest statewide gathering of local officials.
