There are few, if any, of us who don’t look fondly back to our childhood days and the fun we used to have riding our bikes to school and back home, or out on adventures through undiscovered territories, and so on.
For many, these pleasures extended far into adulthood as well. And for certain others, cycling serves as a pleasurable and healthy alternative means of transportation on a regular basis.
Somerville is a city that proudly looks back through its past while embracing the possibilities and challenges of adapting to whatever the future may bring in a proactively dynamic way.
The city’s efforts to encourage and develop alternative means of transportation has garnered recognition and praise from those concerned with this issue.
It seems to be a remarkable thing, that in such a densely populated area we somehow manage to continue to adapt and develop those enhancements to our infrastructure that improve the quality of life for so many.
Many residents aren’t likely to ride bicycles or even avail themselves of the excellent transit system that exists and is being expanded upon within the city.
But for those who do and will, a great sense of gratitude and appreciation of the forward thinking actions of our civic leaders must come to mind.
Walk, run, or swim, we have to get around. Somerville is a city that knows how.
