This Friday, November 14, the Vernon Street 40th Anniversary Opening Reception takes place at the Somerville Museum, 1 Westwood Road. Over the years, Vernon Street Studios has been recognized as a community well known throughout the area for the quality of work produced by artists with established reputations as well as exciting newcomers. Located in an historic 19th-century brick industrial building, Vernon Street housed the first group of artists in Somerville to open their studios to the public in 1974. This year marks their 40th Anniversary of Vernon Street Open Studios, one of the oldest open studios events in the Greater Boston area. To honor this milestone, they will be having a special exhibit from mid- November to December at the Somerville Museum, featuring some of the original artists at Vernon as well as current residents.

November 14 through 20th, God of Carnage, a play at Next Door Center for the Arts in Winchester, 40 Cross Street. Our own David Lebahn, from here in the Ville, is part of Next Door Center for the Arts and is letting people here know that tickets are available at the door. The play is a dark comedy of manners without manners. A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. Diplomatic niceties are at first observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off. The couples soon find themselves left with more than their liberal principles in tatters. Written by Yasmina Reza. Reserved seating: $32/adult, $25/senior and student, $15/under 18. Featuring Brett Milanowski as Alan, Roz Beauchemin as Annette, Allen Phelps as Michael, and Lisa F. Tucker as Veronica.

Ward 3 Alderman Rob McWatters, the “constituent service Alderman,” will be having a fundraiser on November 19th at Sally O’Brien’s on Somerville Avenue. He’s very popular here in the city and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the place packed. We did hear he might have some surprise guests in attendance.

Happy Birthday to some of our fans and readers around the Ville this week: Big Happy Birthday to Sheila MacEachern who is celebrating this week. Our good friend Joe Nardella is also celebrating this week. We wish them both a big Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday as well to new dad Robert Dubois who is celebrating this week. You can see Robert every now and then at MGH.

Adam is very familiar with Somerville and worked at Senator Charlie Shannon’s office for a few years. Adam is young and newly elected in the last city elections over there and he’s a very popular person in both cities.

Ten Hills has been experiencing a weird gas odor lately and no one, not even the fire department or gas company, could find the leak. It was very heavy Monday night throughout the entire neighborhood. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this it will be located and fixed.

You can tell Winter Hill is going to experience a sort of facelift soon. The building at the corner of Temple and Broadway will be coming down shortly. They are in the process of removing all that old crusty copper guard along the top of the building (bet that got a nice piece of change).

The rumor on the Board of Alderman is that President Bill White just might be the president again for next year. And why not? He does know all the rules and moves the meetings along so they’re not too boring. Of course, this is a rumor that we couldn’t confirm yet.

The largest percentage of Somerville High School graduating seniors in a single class (29%) have gotten an early start to their college journeys by earning John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Program awards. Eighty-four SHS students were notified earlier this fall of their selection for full scholarship tuition waivers by the Department of Education to attend a participating Massachusetts public institution of higher education. Recipients of a John and Abigail Adams Scholarship award are eligible for a non-need based tuition waiver to one of 27 participating public institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. A list of those institutions is available on the Department of Education website at http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/adams.html.
