Despite valiant efforts, the Somerville Storm 18A team continues to emerge on the losing end of several close contests. After suffering a tough 14-7 defeat to the Winthrop Vikings, the Storm succumbed in a tough 11-7 defeat to the Belmont Breakers. As a result, the Storm stand at 1-6 overall.
“The girls are working hard, and we’ve been in every game this season,’’ said coach Krista Invernizzi. “The girls are doing a great job, working hard. Some of the teams that we’re up against are some college freshmen, and it’s giving the girls some great experience.”
In the Winthrop loss, Stephanie Chaves earned the loss on the mound.
Offensively, Ashley Auciello, Meghan O’Brien and Zoe King all each recorded two hits apiece followed by Brianna Dell’Iasola and Ashley Lima.
After both teams traded scores in the early innings, the Storm momentarily grabbed a brief lead before the Vikings stormed back with several unanswered runs en route to the victory.
In last Wednesday’s match-up against Belmont, the Storm succumbed in a tough 11-7 defeat. Offensively, Auciello rose to the occasion, recording several key hits along with Christine Valente, Isabella Panlnage along with Kristie Welch and Marisa Gould, who also contributed.
“We’re definitely getting enough offense to win games,’’ said Invernizzi. “We just have to improve on some areas in order for us to come out on top. The girls are doing a great job, and they’ve improved with every game. These girls are indeed a pleasure to coach.”
On the 14 year old squad, the Storm is off to a 1-3 start. After emerging with a 25-17 win over the Melrose White, the Storm succumbed in a 15-10 defeat. Following an eight day break, the Storm fell in a tough 17-4 defeat to the Methuen Majesty before losing to the Malden Hurrifans in a 15-3 defeat.
Offensively, the Storm has been led by the power of Kayla O’Regan along with Samantha Sahlas, Brenna Forestall, Ashley Dean along with Ashley Dean and Kate Medrano.
Also contributing has been Dell’Isola, Dyani Davis and Haley Rao, all three of whom who have served on the Highlanders’ junior varsity squad. On the mound has been the pitching duo of Emily Woodman and Amolee Hawkins while Jennie White, Deider Mathews, Andrea Rao and Jennifer Toner have also contributed.
“The girls have been very competitive and I’m pleased with the progress,’’ said Invernizzi, who coaches the 18A team. “It gives them experience and it prepares them for the varsity season.”
