Somerville Police: Cash drawer thief couldn’t open door

A Cambridge man who tried to steal a cash drawer filled with $340 from a Walgreen's on Broadway June 21 was slowed down when he tried to leave the store through the entrance and could not open the door, according to police.

Kenneth Allen smiled at a Walgreen's cashier and stepped behind the counter before pulling a cash drawer out and trying to run out of the store, police said.

Police said when Allen fled, he was stopped at the entrance when he couldn't open the door. Allen allegedly dropped the cash drawer and ran down Thurston Street, where he was found by police in a driveway

Police said $340 cash was in the drawer and the drawer itself was worth $500. Allen was arrested and charged with larceny over $250.
