The Board of Aldermen meets each week to discuss important issues and happenings within the community, and that includes a chance to recognize achievements of its residents and public servants.
During the boards Jan. 9 meeting, Alderman Dennis Sullivan recognized Officer Nicholas Stiles, who is retiring from the Somerville Police Department after 40 years of service, 20 of which were served as the Ward 1 community police officer.
When informed about receiving this commendation from the city, Officer Stiles was said to be “tickled pink by this honor.” Although he has headed south for a few months, he will be back in March to receive his commendation.
Also on the board’s list of recognitions was John Richard, a senior at Arlington Catholic High School. Sullivan addressed Richard and his parents, who were present at the meeting, and asked them to come forward to receive Richard’s recognition for all of his accomplishments to date.
John is a four-year varsity golf team player for Arlington Catholic High School and is also a varsity goaltender for the school, whose team is currently undefeated. He has been the Central Catholic All Star in golf for three years. In 2012, he achieved the title of Central Catholic League Medalist in golf with a score of 73.
In 2013, he also placed second in that same competition with a score of 73. Furthermore, he placed second that year in the state sectional finisher with a score of 74. He is now being honored by being named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team for golf.
