Our View of the Times – December 11

powderhouse_viewThe announcement that Partners Healthcare will be placing a huge administrative office complex at Assembly Row is a welcome one, and we should be welcoming the organization with open arms.

This impressively large and well-operated company should prove to be quite a positive and dynamic addition to the Assembly Row mix.

While some voice concerns over the fact that Partners is a tax-exempt non-profit organization and will not be directly contributing to the city’s economy as a strictly commercial entity, there are peripheral benefits that will become apparent as the complex settles in and flourishes in its new location.

Some 4,500 employees will be assimilating into the local economy, availing themselves of the goods and services of Somerville merchants and service providers.

Additional contributions to the city will be made by Partners and, along with the prestige that comes with hosting such a highly regarded organization, a win/win situation has taken place, making winners of all concerned.

Kudos to the developers, city representatives, and all the others who helped to negotiate and ultimately seal the deal that has been made.

We are confident that this is just the beginning of great things to come for Assembly Row and the city at large over the years to come.
