A maintenance worker at the Somerville Housing Authority, and son of a city police officer, was arrested this morning at his 43 Josephine St. home by a special team of state troopers assigned to the state attorney general’s office.

After his arrest, Daniel R. Matthews, 40, was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury on charges of possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, said Corey Welford, a spokesman for Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly.

Matthews is the son of Somerville Police Capt. Daniel P. Matthews.

Because of Matthews’ prior criminal record, he was also indicted for being an armed career criminal, Welford said.

State Police assigned to the attorney general’s special investigations and narcotics team, along with members of the Somerville Housing Authority Police, executed a search warrant on a Somerville Housing Authority locker belonging to Matthews. Inside the locker, police found a .32 caliber handgun, more than three pounds of marijuana, a digital scale and numerous plastic baggies, he said.

Matthews was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court in Cambridge, where Judge Charles Grabau set bail at $2,500 cash and ordered Matthews to report to probation once a week and obtain permission from probation to travel out of state. A pretrial conference is set for Oct. 14, Welford said.

Asst. Attorney General Robert Fisher, who is assigned to the special investigations and narcotics team, is prosecuting the Matthews case, Welford said.
