City honors Oliveira as Officer of the Year

City aldermen and Mayor Joseph A. CurMariotatone awarded a citation to the police officer of the year to Mario Oliveira, Thurs. Jan. 13 in the Aldermanic Chambers at City Hall.

Police Chief George F. McLean said he made the recommendation for officer of the year based on the recipients continued professionalism, dedication and demonstrated concern for his fellow officers and citizens.

 Alderman Ward 1 William M. Roche and Alderman at Large Dennis Sullivan presented the citation to Officer Oliveira.

 Roche referenced the continued work and dedication Oliveira has exhibited to the communities seniors by restoring the Ralph & Jenny Senior Center 9 New Washington St.

 “It’s a long time overdue. The senior’s appreciate your efforts, the council on aging appreciates your efforts, so congrats,” said Roche.

 Alderman Ward 4 Walter F. Pero broke into the presentation with a story of his own about his relationship to Oliveira as a citizen.

 “A while ago Officer Oliveira made a call to my home. He performed his duties excellently. Since then we’ve had a special bond. He’s been my officer of the year for the past three years,” he said.

 Oliveira took the podium and his citation and thanked the mayor and the aldermen.

 “I’d like to thank the Mayor and the Board of Alderman,” he said. “I’d also like to thank my brothers and sisters on the force. I’m only as good as they are. I’m honored to serve our citizens, especially the seniors. They made the city what it is today and we can’t forget them,” he said.

 In addition to his work at the Senior Center, Oliveira was also instrumental in two murder investigations.

 McLean said Oliveira assisted in the murder investigation and arrest of suspects in the Ryan Sullivan murder. In addition he assisted in the murder investigation and arrest of a suspect for a murder committed in Malden.
