New England Championship Wrestling, which provides live professional wrestling in small venues throughout the region, presents one of the most unique wrestling events in New England history Sunday.
“Superslam, a pro wrestling doubleheader, will be a very unique event because not only is it two shows in one day but it’ll also be a fan-interactive event,” said Sheldon Goldberg, president and founder of NECW.
Superslam will take place at Good Time Emporium, 30 Assembly Square Drive, he said.
“This smaller arena which offers around 300 seats, unlike the Fleet Center’s 20,000, gives a chance for fans to receive a much more intimate experience with pro wrestling which is the charm of our company,” said Goldberg.
The day of wrestling begins at one o’clock in the afternoon with a series of men’s matches; three NECW championships will be defended, including when “Revolution” Chris Venom will defend his NECW Heavyweight Championship against the former champion “The Golden Greek” Alex Arion, he said.
Joe Cheche, who just won the NECW Television Championship, last month, will defend his title against “The Egomaniac” Johnny Idol, a veteran wrestler. NECW Tag Team champions “RAVE” Zack Statick and Kristian Frost will also battle Mighty Minnie and Andrew Lyons at 1 p.m.
Frankie Arion, a former Heavyweight Champion and the tag team D-Unit, Doug Summers and Rocco Abruzzi, are just a few of the other legendary wrestlers competing that afternoon, he said.
After the first round of matches, NECW will hold a 5 p.m. press conference and pizza party for both its wrestlers and fans. “It’s all a part of the promotion as something different, something you would never see other major leagues doing,” said Goldberg.
NECW is committed to providing fans a chance to view wrestling in a completely different way, he said. “We have to do things that are unique to show the public what we’re about so that they’ll come back.”
The press conference will present the champions and allow for a time of pictures and autographs. The eight women wrestlers and two alternates competing that evening for the first ever NECW Women’s Championship will also be formally introduced, he said.
“Women wrestling has been a part of our company since the very beginning and its time we made them a formal part of our promotion,” said Goldberg.
Many long time fans and parents go to NECW matches because even the women are portrayed with real professional athleticism, he said. “Unlike many of the women in the WWE, these female wrestlers are real athletes, who are first and foremost introduced as real athletes,” he said.
Alere Little Feather and Fantasia, who will both be making New England debuts, will join the infamous Violet Flame, Mercedes Martinez of NECW for over four years, Cindy Rogers of Maryland, the veteran Riptide, Lucuis Little of N.Y., and Niki Roxxs, the dark horse of the tournament at 7 p.m. that evening. The two alternates are Della Morte of the New England area and the rookie Jade.
The one night, eight women elimination tournament is making New England history, Goldberg said.
“No one in the area has ever done anything like this and we have wrestlers who will be amazing. Mercedes Martinez, for one, is probably the best female wrestler in all of North America.”
Superslam is an opportunity to not only present an exceptional day of wrestling to its long-time fans but a chance to lure more people to the sport of wrestling in general, he said.
NECW proposes a fan-friendly, family friendly, affordably priced unique alternative to nationally televised professional wrestling, Goldberg said.
