Desmond: Capobianco matter not on tonight’s agenda

President of the Board of Aldermen Bruce M. Desmond told The Somerville News the aldermen will not discuss the case of former city officer Alessandro Capobianco’s reinstatement at tonight’s regular meeting.

Desmond said the city’s right to appeal the Civil Service Commission’s decision to put Capobianco back on the city’s police force expires Midnight Friday, but there are other options available to the city, such as an appeal to the Massachusetts Superior Court.

The city could also reach a financial settlement with Capobianco, whereby Capobianco would drop his request to return to work and the city saved the expense of mounting an appeal, a scenario Desmond refused to comment on.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone recused himself because he is Capobianco’s cousin, a move Desmond said he agreed with, which made him the acting mayor in regards to the case.

Although, he has full authority, Desmond said he was seeking out the opinions of other aldermen and was working with City Solicitor John Gannon before making his decision.
