Shannon set to endorse Mackey for Senate
Dorothy Shannon announced her endorsement of Joseph K. Mackey today in the 2nd Middlesex state Senate special election. The election is being held to complete the remainder of the term held by her husband, the late Senator Charles E. Shannon, (D-Winchester), who passed away unexpectedly on April 5th.
Shannon said she made her decision after long and thoughtful consideration of all candidates in the field.
“I am thrilled to announce my support for Joe Mackey. My family and I believe him to be the best embodiment of my husband’s ideals, ethics, and value system. In his fifteen years in the Senate, Charlie raised the standard on just how effective a public servant could be as an advocate for those less fortunate, and he always saw that as one of the central roles of government. Charlie never forgot where he came from, and made it his mission to help people. I see many of those same qualities in Joe Mackey. I believe he also will make it his goal to help people in this district and state, and to work to make our community the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
In response to the endorsement, Mackey said, “I am honored and humbled by the trust and support Dorothy Shannon and her family have shown my campaign. The legacy that Charlie left in the Senate is one of compassion, concern, and attentiveness to those in need. I will do my best to continue and build upon that storied legacy.”
Shannon said another one of the keys for supporting Mackey is his strong commitment to education.
“One of my husband’s primary goals in public life was ensuring that the next generation, our children, had the tools they need to succeed. Whether those tools took the form of excellent educational opportunities, equal access to health care, a safe and nurturing home environment, or quality recreational facilities, he championed them all. After numerous discussions with my family and friends, it became clear that it was and is Joe Mackey, who is hands-down the best equipped to provide the tools for our next generation to compete, both locally and globally,” she said.
Mackey said Shannon’s support will be seen on election day.
“This endorsement will give my campaign a huge boost that will bring us first to the finish line on August 30th.”
