Early campaigner wants your votes
By Andrea Gregory

The competition for the state representative may be heating up, but candidate Elizabeth Moroney knows the weather is definitely cooling off. Instead of just the usual buttons and bumper stickers associated with political campaigns, Moroney is hoping ice scrapers will help wipe out the competition.

Moroney began handing out blue ice scrapers to promote herself as the ideal future-state representative, on Nov. 8, the first opportunity to pull candidacy papers. They were also out before the first snow fall. This week may have been the perfect opportunity to pull out the Moroney scraper, but whether it will be enough to pull in the votes will not be determined until next month.
Shortly after Sen. Pat Jehlen was elected, Moroney began wondering who would be the right person to move into the vacant state representative seat. She said she asked herself, ‘Why not me?’ and began strategizing her campaign platform and ways to help state policies and procedures benefit the Somerville community.
Moroney said her plan is to commit to the campaign. She said her sense of commitment will continue in the State House if she wins the Jan. 10 election. But for now its full speed down the campaign trail.
“I go door knocking every day,” said Moroney.
Moroney has served as vice chairman of the Planning Board and as chief of staff to Sen. Pam Resor for several years, giving her insight as to how state and city politics operate. Though she said she is leaving both jobs to focus on the current opportunity to be state representative for the 27th Middlesex District, she emphasizes that her past has prepared her for the job.
Moroney said she has already begun door-knocking, and admits it this race will be challenging.
Like her competition, Denise Provost, Moroney has concerns about recent cuts to state aid. The two democrats both say state sincere intentions for running. Moroney said she hopes her work at the State House and familiarity with the process will be one of the things that sets her apart.
“This is a short race. It’s winter. It’s the holiday times,” said Moroney. “I am really looking forward to the rest of the campaign. It’s a short campaign so we are hunkering down on identifying votes.”
