The Greater Boston League freshman/sophomore track and field meet gave the younger talent a chance to shine, and did it ever for the Somerville High squad.
“Overall a super day for our youngsters,” Somerville head coach Charlie O’Rourke said. “I am very happy with our young athletes and the progress that they have made during the season, especially in the field events, where we have so many first-year competitors. They could be the key to our success later in the schedule.”
Leading the way for the Highlanders was sophomore Saragrace Magre, who had a terrific outing with two individual first place finishes and a top spot in a relay race. Magre won the 400 meter hurdles in 77.5 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 7 inches, and was part of the winning group in the 4 x100 relay along with Valencia Augustin, Leighann Nguyen, and Melissa Sanon that finished in a time of 55.5 seconds.
Sanon also had an individual first place finish in the triple jump with a combined leap of 28 feet, 3 inches, and placed second in the 100 meter run in 13.9 seconds.
Also impressing were freshmen throwers Bianca DeBarros, who finished first in the javelin toss with a heave of 73 feet, 9 inches, and Theodora Babilye, who took first in the discus throw with a personal best toss of 69 feet, 5 inches.
The 4 x 400 relay team of Miranda Rego, Catherine Nakato, Maureen McNabb, and Delmy Hernandez finished in second place.
“Although there is no official score kept, we far outscored the other GBL teams in this meet,” O’Rourke said.
Augustin also competed in the 200 meter (31.3) and the long jump (10’5).
Other Highlanders competing included, in the 100 meter, Jennifer Jeune meter (16.0), Kayla Batista (16.4), Karlee McCarron (16.4), Ila Lama (16.0), Joanne Simon (15.5), and Tamika Michel (20.0); in the 200 meter, Taylor Corning (38.0); in the long jump, Oneda Lalaj (10’5); and in the javelin throw, Lovetelene Leneus (35’6), Aminata Keita (33’0), and Shayla Tran (38’8).
