News Talk for the week of March 22
We heard a good one the other night. How would you like to be on the receiving end of this water bill? The law firm of Sillari & Glines on Highland Avenue received a bill for slightly over $11K! That’s right $11,000.00, and all they have is a bathroom sink and toilet in the building. At least they don’t have to go too far to make an appeal. Evidently there’s still problems over at the Water Department. If you received a bill larger then expected let us know.

Still no results on the Traffic & Parking missing money taken almost 2 months ago now. We hear recently appointed Captain Charles Femino is in charge of the investigation or, rather, lack of investigation. Rumor around town is that the good captain stopped doing the lie detector tests after interrogating only four people. It is his job to investigate, but as you can see, there is still no resolution to the matter. We bet that Mayor Joe would like to finally get this problem behind him.
We hear that Alderman-at-Large Bruce Desmond may be running for the Middlesex County clerk of courts position this year. Edward Sullivan, a hugely popular figure in local politics, is stepping down from the position after a whopping 48 years on the job.
His nephew, the former mayor of Cambridge — Michael Sullivan — has already declared his intent to go the job in the next election. The Sullivan name is like magic in Middlesex County (Edward, Walter, etc.,), but we‚Äôve been told that Michael‚Äôs biggest fear was running against somebody from Lowell (a city with enough voters to make a real difference in a county-wide race) and do you know where Bruce is originally from? That‚Äôs right, Lowell ‚Äì his father, Jack, was a city councilor and state representative for many years in that city and maybe Bruce can follow up on some of that popularity (combined with his own here in Somerville) and pull off an upset. We figure we already have two county elected officials from Somerville ‚Äì Gene Brune and John Buonomo ‚Äì why not Bruce?

Retired DPW highway superintendent Joe Voutour was reportedly seen at the private party thrown by U.S. Congressman Michael Capuano every year to thank his staff. The party was held the same day the Farm Team ran the story about Voutour’s accusations of inappropriate fundraising by the Curtatone administration and Voutour was allegedly treated like a king by Capuano and his staff. What could that mean? We’re not sure yet, but one source told us to prepare for an Italian political bloodbath in the upcoming months.

Two local guys from West Somerville, Karl Dias and Anthony Mello, have developed a new Bar-B-Que sauce called “Fat Boy.” It was even picked up by Stop & Shop recently. We’ve tasted the sauce and we highly recommend it. So if you see it on the shelf at Stop & Shop buy it. Not only to support two local young businessmen, but more importantly, because it tastes great.

There’s a rumor out there that Alderman-At-Large Dennis Sullivan might consider a run for the soon-to-be vacant state Senate seat presently held by Jarrett Barrios, who is running for District Attorney. We heard others might jump in that race, because early favorite Anthony Galluccio is looking more and more vulnerable ever since Channel 5 reported that he may have been driving drunk when he caused a car crash in Boston last December. If you had the chance to walk right into an open state Senate seat (making what, $75,000 a year?) wouldn’t you start taking cabs and/or drinking at home for a little while?

New Ward 6 Alderman Rebekkah Gewirtz must not have played stickball as a kid when she was growing up in Rhode Island. Seems she wants to cure the alleged stickball epidemic at the Brown school (is it really that big of a deal?) by just handing up a sign that says “No Stick Ball Playing against the wall.” Yeah, sure she knows city kids. That’s like saying don’t push that red button. But then again she represents the progressive democrats doesn’t she? And they want to stop every little thing they don’t agree with.

This past Saturday evening at the Masonic building on Highland Avenue a full 7 course meal was served by local gourmet chef turned real estate broker Ross Blouin. He cooked all day to serve a dinning hall full of hungry masons.
