City to residents: Drink the water, ignore the color

Somerville residents could see discolored water flowing from their faucets between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. this Summer, said Water and Sewer Superintendant Carol Antonelli this week.

Water department workers will be flushing hydrants and operating gate valves throughout the city during the months of June, July and August in an effort to maintain the water distribution system.

While the flushing work is taking place between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., residents may experience a short period of water of water discoloration. Though the water may look uninviting, city officials said it is safe to drink. But washing clothes, especially white fabrics, should be avoided until the water runs clear. If any rust stains appear on wet laundry, the clothes should not be dried and the water department will provide a bottle of rust remover.
